Patron and President

Royal Patron

HRH the Princess Royal is the new Patron of the South Georgia Heritage Trust.

The Princess was approached by the SGHT because of her interest in, and commitment to, the Antarctic region. She is already the Patron of the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust and recently visited the South Atlantic region on a Royal tour that included the Falkland Islands and the BAS station Rothera on the Antarctic Peninsula.

The initial period of the Princess Royal’s patronage will be for three years and we look forward greatly to her attendance at future SGHT events.

President

In 2006 Alastair Fothergill became President of South Georgia Heritage Trust. Despite his many time and travel commitments, Alastair could not turn down the chance to support South Georgia and agreed to be SGHT's first President..

Alastair Fothergill is the series producer of Planet Earth and the director of Earth, the associated feature film.  He studied zoology at the University of Durham and made his first film, on the Okavango, while still a student.  Alastair joined the BBC Natural History Unit in 1983, working on The Really Wild Show, Wildlife on One and the series The Trials of Life.  He was appointed Head of the Unit in 1992, and during his tenure he produced the award-winning series Life in the Freezer.  In June 1998 he stood down to concentrate on his role as series producer of the hugely successful The Blue Planet.   He has also presented several television programmes, including The Abyss, and is the author of three books.
